Planet description
The watery world of Etheria is a terran standard planet, with temperatures, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere all within the margins of what humanity would call ideal conditions. Blue green oceans of salty water speckled with green and brown blotches of land beneath skies of purest azure and fluffy white. Etheria has been a paradise of a world for thousands of years, and while it is no where near being an industrialised hell mankind’s presence is finally beginning to be felt. The once verdant jungles and pristine oceans are being squeezed for their valuable resources with numerous plant and animal species becoming extinct every day. Farmland has replaced wilderness on much of the land to such an extent that the only true wilderness left can only be found in special reserves, in fact the continent of Treteman is nothing but a chequer board of fields where once temperate forests had spread from coast to coast. However despite mans endeavours Etheria remains a beautiful world on which to live.
The cities of Etheria are clean and modern, white, chrome and black glass is a dominant theme, a theme which has seen itself propagate to other advanced worlds in the sector. Great smooth ribbons of plasticrete wind out and around the cities like coils of string, punctured by the arrow straight mag-engine lines which criss-cross the planet like a great web. Ancient ruins of the first fall civilisation still break the landscape like rotting teeth, a reminder of a time no one ever wishes to see again.
Government
The government of Etheria is best described as a meritocracy, where a worldwide institution educates those who are interested in working in the government and picks the best candidates through rigorous exams, psychological testing and personal interviews. Every official and electoral candidate of the government is chosen by this institution, called the Etherian Agent Selection Bureau, or simply the Bureau. For less significant positions, such as city mayors and regional ministers, the process is executed entirely by this institution. For more critical positions, however, such as significant leaders of each continent or the position of Imperial commander itself, officials of certain influence are free to pose as a candidate in a democratic election. Before candidates may be voted upon, however, the Bureau’s Peer Council must test every candidate according to their own strict regulations. Their demands are usually so strict, that only the brightest, most experienced and competent leaders are available for such democratic elections, to ensure that incompetent world leaders do not rise to power simply due to popularity.
The Imperial commander of Etheria is known as the Prime Facilitor, and normally enjoys great confidence from the people, due to the complex selection process enforced by the Bureau. Naturally, incidents of corruption in the Peer Council have occurred, allowing dubious members of government to rise to the position of Prime Facilitator, but such incidents are generally less common on Etheria compared to other worlds in the Anargo sector. Once a Prime Facilitor is elected, he or she must work closely with the Bureau’s Peer Council, a select group of academic high brows, who ponder the fate of Etheria to obscure lengths. It is the duty of the Prime Facilitor to take the high minded concepts and ideals of the council and put them into practice.
After a Prime Facilitor is elected, new democratic elections are carried out every ten years, although a Prime Facilitor is free to hold office for three terms, for a total of thirty years. For the most part, the Facilitors have been gentle men and women who have introduced change gradually, leading to a state of high satisfaction amongst the populace.
Religion
The Imperial cult holds sway over the population and by decree of the ruling elite the only form of religion that is still legal. In general the populous is more apathetic than devout, though as in any large group of individuals some are more pious than others. Worship is not limited or proscribed, but the pace of life on Basoora tends to mean people have little time for devotions unless they make an effort to make time, and so once a week is the norm for those who choose to go to temple. Indeed Etheria seems to drifting away from religion altogether, the current climate of low crime, high personal wealth and confidence in science to solve all problems, has in some instance led to derision of foolish superstitions and rituals.
Society and law
The Law is all seeing and all knowing according to most, all aspects of life are monitored by a dizzying array of surveillance and intelligence devices, fully accessible in real time by the security forces of Etheria. This has led to a state of escalation between the law enforcement agencies and those of the criminal fraternity, indeed so fierce is this technological arms race that only the most powerful of imperial organisations would be able to keep up.
The most obvious evidence of this are the cameras located on and in every street and road, these run constant facial recog routines and monitor all macro movement of vehicles and people. Optical and DNA scanners are located in every building, these serve a duel purpose, personal security relies mostly on optic and DNA recog software so in order to get into your own home that information has to be in central records. Also information companies use them for DPA\'s Direct personnal advertising, these companies have a direct connection to the security forces who use this information to boost the effectiveness of their other surveillence methods. HDM or Hostile and Dangerous Material detectors are situated through out the all population centres and can detect anything from home made explosives and poisons to bio, nuclear and chemical weapons. Weapons are prohibeted to all but authorised personnel, and to this end weapon detectors can be found at regular intervals through out a city, in such a pattern so as to be unavoidable. The latest addition to the security arsenel is the pheremone detectors, while body morphing, and optic transplants can fool most security checks, changing your scent is not a technology that is particularly advanced.
Genetic records begin at birth for every individual, and it is a matter of law that any viral re-writing must be declared so that records may be updated, to decrease needless criminalisation all citizens of Etheria are required to submit to a genetic exam every 2 years. Biometric tags are implanted at birth to monitor physical and mental health, they can aslo be used to track an individual should the other methods prove ineffective. These tags can also give an early warning of psycic development, certain patterns of brain activity have been observed in regards to this, and allow the authorities to install the correct inhibitors before their abilities become a danger. Psykers are also the last great ace up the sleeve of planetary security and are a method of crime detection and prevention that most criminals find impossible to subvert. Out beyond the population centres there is very little in the way of obvious surveillence, indeed the wilderness is the only place free from prying eyes, but thats only if you ignore the night eye observation satellites. With a resolution good enough to pick out the hairs on a persons head, night eye is the last word in unobtrusive observation, there is no where to hide.
Technology
Technology on Etheria is at the cutting edge, especially in the fields of Bionics and viral genetics. The geriatric clinics are the best in the sector and have a wide and powerful clientele. As a result Basoora has invested heavily in defence projects to both protect the planet and engender an atmosphere of safety for the visiting dignitaries. Energy is supplied by clean sources such as plasma, Nuclear, solar and wave power, this has provided an abundance of clean cheap energy for the populace, and the effect can clearly be seen when the sun goes down.
Holographic technology is wide spread, and has permeated most levels of society, as has the global cogitator net, a vast and all encompassing form of communication, information and entertainment. Both technologies have been happily married to the betterment and efficiency of Etherian society. Suffer not the mutant takes on a pleasantly surprising twist on Etheria as all foetuses are screened for mutation, and any mutation which spontaneously appears is corrected with a bio-graft of the affected area. For the citizens of Etheria all technology is open to them if they can afford it.
Trade and tithes
Etheria trades in life times, more specifically extending them for those who can afford it, the medical treatments are so advanced they have been able to franchise the process on other worlds. They also excel in unobtrusive bionic enhancement, not the crude and ugly add-ons the Mechanicus dole out to the masses but high end, perfectly integrated systems that unless specified will be completely hidden from view. Both Technologies have been enough to satisfy the Imperium and allow life on Etheria to travel in the direction society wanted it to.
Unfortunately the numerous Ork invasions and chaos uprisings through out the sector have meant that Etheria has had to plunder its riches to sustain the countless war efforts. It now exports high end weapons technology and numerous exotic ores and compounds, as well as finished hull sections for assembly in the Anargo shipyards. Basooran security systems have also become a major export for the planet, which exists in a virtual police state, though the population might not see it that way.
Entertainment is also a big export, and their hologames suites, and TI vid-feeds have found an appreciative audience across Anargo.
Physiology
Etherians are barley distinguishable from the Terran norm other than being slightly broader chested, but for casual observers there is no obvious sign, apart from good health, that they are anything but a model of Humanity. Medical science on Etheria has eliminated most diseases both external and genetic from its population and has even halted the aging process, so everyone looks young, and
with minimal cosmetic enhancement, beautiful. The Human form is for them the ultimate expression of perfection, and they are very reluctant to mar that with tattoos or indelicate implants.
Psychology
Smug, self satisfied, arrogant are what most outsiders would consider Etherians to be, and it would not be an inaccurate observation. The high standards of living and education has meant that Etherians have acquired quite a superiority complex when it comes to off-worlders. Get to know the people of Etheria however and your opinions may change, while they are superficially obnoxious, they have a deep respect for life and can be extremely charitable to those who need help. They have a deep seated hatred and disgust of obvious robotic and cybernetic implants, a disgust so strong they stoned the first representatives of Mars to set foot on their world.
language and dialect
High gothic is the Etherian norm for language in both written and aural forms. Education is considered a right of every individual on Etheria, especially where the Imperium is concerned, its is actually considered a stigmatism not to be able to speak high gothic, and so low gothic is something of a rarity. Only the poorest citizens of Etheria use low gothic as their primary mode of communication.
Planetary defence force
Etherian PDF and security forces are one and the same, it was decided that rather than have two separate armed bodies, both institutions would be combined into a unified force. This has worked supremely well for Etheria, as it now has not only a well trained highly professional army, it has a very well armed and armoured security force, one which has received accolades and praise from the Arbites whenever they have had to work together.
The Tessla SSW Mag-launchers and energy weapons located in high orbit can cause a lot of problems for hostile ships, the mag-launchers ability to fire solid shot or torpedo warheads has made them incredibly versatile in a planetary defence role. Other military installations include several large fighter bays, which can house up to a hundred attack craft of varying configurations, and the ODIN missile platforms. Etheria has very few heavily armed system ships and would rely heavily on the Imperial navy should the prospect of invasion rear its head.

History
Etheria was colonised by a splinter of the origional colonial fleet which settled Anargo, a difference of philosophical opinion was the primary cause for the split and the fact that there were two G class stars in the sector with terran compatible worlds allowed for the seperation to be a mutually benificial decision. Like Anargo the exact date of colonisation has been lost but Archeo-surveyors have placed the colonisation to around M25. It was ideological differences which forced the Etherians to separate themselves from the Anargan colonists, the reliance in intelligent machines was a step to far for Etherians and so they broke away to pursue a more natural lifestyle. Though they didn’t know it yet this would prove to be an incredibly influential and life saving decision. They did not abandon all machines nor their high technology lifestyle, these things would be needed to allow them to develop their now famous bio tech devices, compounds and medicines, it was just the intelligent machines they discarded. This concept of mankind advancing its own evolution and not putting it in the hands of something else was a new and radical philosophy at the time. Known as the Iderion philosophy its founder, Markus Iderion, would later become leader of the Etherian schism. Markus’s books, The Human Soul and the Tears of a Souless being, and the concepts therein found fertile ground in the minds of many in the countless star systems of humanity.
It was this new ideological zeal which propelled the colonisation of Anargo, however the Iderion philosophy was not the only one to make a leap to the stars, Parisi Mordival, and his Winding Way esposed many similar ideas and themes but with the concept that intelligent machines were part of mandkinds destiny and not a major roadblock as the Iderions believed. Parisi was older and his other works, the Cycles of Light and the Paragon of Eternity, which posited that man and machine combining into a perfect whole was inevitable, had been around for some time. His followers outnumbered the Iderions and his word held greater sway amongst his peers, he was also very wealthy and so it was he who was chosen to lead the colonisation of the new worlds discovered in the Mox expanse, which would later become the Anargo sector.

I'll see if I find another version. Though if you posted it in pieces instead of re-posting the whole SR, you should still find it on the previous forum. Oh, and do you remember when you added the new stuff?

Well, that would explain it. My last database backup is from december 07. Kage does not have a more recent backup, and unless you do, we're stuck with the data from december 07. In other words, your last changes are lost. What did you change?

It was mostly the history section, planet description and psychology I think *sigh* well it was my own fault and while I did actually pen some notes on paper its going to take me a while to redo it all. Just tell me you have the updated versions of Altarra and Theta Corionis otherwise im giving up

I have the database backup from December 31st 2007. If the updated versions of Altarra and Theta Corionis are in there, then I have them. If you made the changes later, without making any copies elsewhere, then they are lost indeed. While it's no one's fault that a lot got lost in the server change, we have been asking members to keep back-up copies of their own work for some time, yeah.
As for giving up? Well, I know the feeling one gets when so much data is lost and you have to start over. Pretty much every time I designed a model in Sketch-Up, I got lazy with saving at some point, and the computer crashed, losing me hours of work. However, keep in mind that we're still probably months away from publishing Altarra and Theta Corionis on the website (since we're starting with the Anargo subsector). While it does suck right now, it might not sting so bad in a few months.
Meanwhile, there's plenty of other fun to be had. You could always take a break from SRs and find something else that interests you

I'm just working on this world for the Dark Heresy world origins, and I'm having a bit of an issue reconciling some of the stuff in this SR. I've go no problem with non-Adeptus Mechanicus technology (as one of the Adeptus Me-can-icus, it's one of the main doctrines
), but some of the stuff in here is going a bit far. A visceral dislike of anyone with obvious bionics (which includes every single non-lay member of the Machine Cult), while still being leaders in high end technology, especially bionics and viral genetics? Genetic re-writing easily available? Massive amounts of holo-graphic technology, and amazing monitoring equipment? Pre-natal correction (not even termination) of mutants?
I think that's going too far. The Adeptus Mechanicus is a Mystery Cult, and letting people who dislike them have a lot of fairly high end technology and spread it to people means
that they're losing control.
And that they do not tolerate.

Now there you go, if I hadnt lost the entire explanation you would not be so put out by the concepts. Basically the world descended into a bio enhanced cybernetic and robotic hell that left a deep and lasting scar on the people and the planet. It was a nightmare and the few who survived vowed never again. But not having smashed all the evil technology they were able to take all the good stuff and prohibitively legislate against the rest. The Mechanicus priests would have looked like demons from the past and so naturally they were made unwelcome. Of course Etheria was happy to release as much pertinent info needed to assuage the imperial forces. Mutants (primitive spacemarines in essence) were created by the chemists to fight the Technotyrant Overlords, the chines, cyber ghouls, flesh harvesters(they needed that flesh for their own experiments) and many more horrors, so mutants are not looked upon kindly. And why should they be they have the technology so they use it. It was the enhanced humans that actually toppled the cyber-mechs and then turned on the chemists. Of course there was still the toxic jungle, poison seas and rad sinks which made the surface not a nice place, and then the enhanced humans started going mad and dying taking a goodly number of innocents with them.
So yeah they dont like or trust the mechanicus and quite frankly they dont need them for anything.

And that's largely my objection. The Adeptus Mechanicus ensures its function in Imperial society, in part, through hydraulic despotism. They control a resource (in this case, high-technology), and they rely on being able to, potentially, cut people off if they don't do as they wish. Add in the Mystery Cult aspect of the Cult Mechanicus (which relies upon advancement, which requires loyalty to learn the new secrets in the next circle in), and a world with high technology which refuses to accept the Mechanicus, and this is a problem. A massive problem.
A suggestion might be to increase the role of the Mechanicus, but make this an important world in which the
Organicists (page 3)
are heavily involved and invested. If they've been supporting the more subtle anti-bionics predjudices, while assuring their comrades in the Mechanicus that they are carefully watching for techno-heresy, the world would give them a place in which the can experiment without the eye of Proteus or Anargo Secundus falling upon them. Such a set up would also ensure that we could give a look at a less machine-orientated Mechanicus faction, give some nice RPG ploy-hooks, and removes some of the feeling of "wrongness" that the current set-up inspires in me, at least.

If that's your stance, Dazo, I'll mark the world as available.

I've just copied the original text from this SR; I was planning on modifying it to keep the same superficial appearance of the world, but below it would be the fact that an Organicist faction of the AdMech is using the world as a test-bed for research and development. We're talking security systems in which every camera over a block connects into one man's brain, through nerves of copper, the man raised to understand that he has as many eyes as he needs. There are giant birds of prey which circle in the dense atmosphere, much bigger than they could be on Earth, which are engineered to attack and carry away law-breakers once they're identified. There are engineered beasts roaming the streets at night, enforcing the curfew. They can only eat criminals, say the government, so if they eat someone, even if they have to break into the house, then they must be criminals. Underneath the cities are the true technological hubs, which carry the water, power, and all the machinery which the cities need. The society is set up so that the intelligent free-thinkers, the ones who notice the contradictory things taught in class, are persecuted, and if they can, they have to flee down into the tunnels. In there, there are technocults to take in the rebels, who oppose the anti-machinery bias of the cities above. They lead to the door of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
In part, this is a get-cyber/biopunk in world, as a specific campaign setting, as I envision it.
