The answer to that lies partially in the history of the project, so let us briefly delve into its murky past... Okay, maybe not murky past, but it just sounded more interesting that way.
Back in the days of
Portent as with most, if not all modern 40k hobbyist forums, there were lulls in the discussion. For Portent this could be jarring, since the 40k Background forum seemed to be one of the
the places to hang out and discuss the 40k universe, and not only that but throw it through the wrangler to come up with (what I would consider to be) some really interesting takes on the 40k universe. In one of these lulls, the creator of the project (i.e.
moi) came up with the idea of randomly generating a full sector of Imperial space, and then slowly and "logically" colonising it to form a richly detailed chunk of the Imperium.
We've worked solidly towards that over the past few years, and while some of the original goals have been changed a bit, but other than that the project still has the same goals:
- The detailed creation of a full Imperial sector with roughly a hundred Imperial colonies contained within a 200 x 200 light year cube, along with aliens, renegades and whatever else might be found in a typical Imperial sector.
- The exploration of the universe beyond, including the galactic Imperium, the enigmatic Eldar, the very depths of the Warp, and anything else that our members wish to tackle.
- To continue to expand upon the Anargo sector to form not only a richly detailed setting, but also a progressive story that is advanced through a combination of wargame and roleplaying campaigns.
We think that there is something for everything at the
Anargo Sector Project. For those that love the background of the
Warhammer 40,000 universe, the focus upon a single sector and everything within it gives an up until recently unparalleled look at a part of the 40k universe. (The recent addition of the Calixis Sector as part of the
Dark Heresy product line, originally by
Black Industries but soon to be published under the banner of
Fantasy Flight Games, will soon go into detail about that sector.) In many ways the advantage of the
Anargo Sector Project is that we - the fans - are able to contribute towards and shape our own sector, as well as explore those parts of the 40k universe that are traditionally left alone by
Games Workshop.
For wargamers and roleplayers we have a setting - and a story - that can be used as a backdrop for both hobbies. The Castellan sector is ravaged by periodic Ork Waaaghs, a Dark Eldar kabal notoriously hunts for slavers around the populous worlds of Meksum and Anargo, and, of course, the threat of Chaos is ever present. From the becalmed Sargassos subsector, the Cursed Subsector, to the shrineworlds of Dorvastor subsector, Anargo provides a rich backdrop to all types of wargame. Likewise, roleplayers might want to explore the machinations of the Meksum subsector as it fights for economic dominance over the traditional seat of power, Anargo, or become embroiled in the secret war between the Dorvastor and Archiaos subsectors for the very soul of the citizens of the Anargo sector.
And at the very heart of Anargo, in the great Abyss, lies a terrible truth that when revealed will shake the very foundations of the sector.
All in all, the Anargo sector is shaping up to be a fascinating place to game, create, and even just discuss with members that have the same interests in the 40k universe.
We hope that you will enjoy contributing to the
Anargo Sector Prjoect and expanding the frontiers of our understanding of the
Warhammer 40,000 universe.
