The noise was soft, it drifted like a wisp, a shadowy echo of sound through the empty halls and cloisters of the Maledictors fortress monastery. Bearly audible over the ever-present hum of the ancient vessel. It was the gentle soothing lullaby that preceded the chapters march to war, the inscribing of the curse litany, their call to battle. Not for the Maledictors are the raucous celebrations or pious contemplations of other chapters, instead, in whispers they carve their curses to the enemy upon sheets of lead, their promises of doom. In silence the sibilant whispers wind around the carved arches of the fortress in coils of bitter scorn, as each battle brother makes his own dedication of hate for the enemies of the Emperor.
|}
==Beliefs==
Not only are the Maledictors finely trained warriors, they are also devout servants of the Emperor. It is this philosophy that forms a central part of the dogma and rituals undertaken by the chapter and acts to guide them in their duty.
===The Emperor===
As with the other chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, the Maledictors do not conform to the Imperial Creed and the deification of the Emperor. Instead they regard the Lord of Mankind as an enlightened and powerful human, the greatest ever to have existed. He is the embodiment of humanity, possessing the highest levels of intelligence, will and strength. None exist that can challenge is power and claim over the Dominion of Man and to stand before him is utter folly.
In his ultimate wisdom, the Emperor sired the Primarchs and in turn created from them the implants that allow a human to become a Space Marine. With these warriors he set in motion his plan to conquer the Galaxy.
===Their Purpose===
===Practices===
----
==Battlecries==
The Maledictors do not have a specific battlecry that they use in battle. Instead they will often adopt chants or prayers that they recite as they march into war. These may take the form of litanies and devotions or be specific curses against a particulary hated foe. Within the chapter, the Chaplains play an important part in raising the hatred and venom of their battle-brothers and will often compose verses that the Maledictors will recite on the field. Below are detailed some of the most well known canticles of the chapter.
* '''Curse of the Trinity, circa M36.'''
<center>''"To those Whom trespass His Realm, We shall see You.''</center>
<center>''To those Whom chastise His name, We shall hear You.''</center>
<center>''To those Whom defile His Form, We shall '''KILL''' You!"''</center>
* '''Curse to a Fallen Wanderer, M36.'''
<center>''"The Road of the Damned is long and winding; I follow it in my hunt for those damned upon it."''</center>
----
==Geneseed==
The geneseed is the lifeblood of a chapter and without it the Space Marines would cease to exist. The Apothecaries of the chapter ensure that the progenoids of each marine are collected so that the chapter may live on.
===Creation===
The Maledictors were part of the 22nd Founding, the most recent after the catastrophies of the Cursed Founding. During this founding experiments were undertaken utilising geneseed taken from the ancient repositories on Mars. Some claim that the geneseed used dates back as far as the Great Crusade. Despite several achievements, the Genetors faced many disappointments; many of the chapters created had unstable geneseed and became horribly mutated, forcing the Inquisition to intervene and destroy them. It is believed that the taint of Chaos was able to corrupt some of the chapters too, delivering them to the arms of the Dark Gods and mutating them further.
The 22nd Founding, during the end of the Age of Apostasy, was aimed at rectifying the numerous problems that had occurred before. The Adeptus Mechanicus, under close scrutiny from the High Lords and the Inquisition, developed new practices for handling and utilising geneseed. No longer would they use the geneseed of one chapter, instead searching the gene-banks for individual zygotes or splicing together favoured strains to create organs of pure lineage. The zygotes used to create the Maledictors reportoire of bio-enhanced organs was derived from numerous chapters.
===Practices===
To this day the Maledictors' geneseed has remained stable and relatively unmutated. This is in part due to the refined practices of the Adeptus Mechanicus and is also down to the Maledictors themselves. As the chapter recruits from a wide population base, taking aspirants from worlds across several sectors, their geneseed has never become geno-fixed to a specific population. The majority of the chapter's geneseed can be used in recruits from any world in Anargo and only a few known incompatibilites exist. Any deleterious mutations that do arise often fail to establish when they are subjected to such a wide genepool. In this manner the Maledictors are able to take new recruits from nearly every world they encounter, unlike chapters such as the Blood Angels or the Salamanders whos recruits must be taken from a single world.
The Apothecaries also ensure that the chapter remains free from taint by constantly monitoring the health of marines and their geneseed. They maitain vast catalogues of lineages that track the succession of geneseed zygotes through the chapter. This information makes it is possible to know where each implant and the geneseed from which it was taken and the number of marines into which it has been used. If a mutation does arise, they can determine those marines that may become affected and ensure that their geneseed is never used to create new zygotes.
===Recruitment===
The Maledictors' recruiting ships may visit numerous worlds in order to gather recruits to be returned to the Monastery Barge. Upon arrival on many worlds they may invoke ancient treaties between them and the Planetary Governor, requiring him to supply aspirants to the chapter. On other worlds they may demand that such requirements are met. In rare circumstances the chapter has forceably taken recruits they desperately need from a planet. As the Maledictors have no homeworld and recruit from numerous worlds, they have to ensure that those they do take will be receptive to their geneseed. In order to find such high matches, the chapter will often take several hundred recruits from a world at a time. The number of successful neophytes created during the recruiting process is infact quite low when compared to other chapters, with as few as 1 in 12 surviving to enter the 10th Company.
A typical recruiting expedition will be led by the Chaplain of the 10th Company, along with members of the Apothecarion and their servo-meds. Unlike many chapters, the Maledictors do not require aspirants to have passed trials or to have fought in battle. It is expected that every child is willing to enter into a life of service to the Emperor as a warrior. It is strength of mind that ensures a marine can utilise the numerous enhancements they were gifted by the Emperor and not their own bodies.
Each aspirant will then have their blood sampled to see if their body will accept the sacred geneseed of the chapter. Those that fail at this stage will not return to their communities, for to have seen the glory of the Emperor's Angels comes at a price. Many aspirants will be taken by the chapter to become serfs and will serve on vessels of the fleet. Most however will suffer the ignominous fate of having their minds wiped and being turned into servitors to assist work in the Forge. A lucky few may prove themselves to the chapter in otherways, learning from the marines and rising to positions in the Fleet or in the Master's Household.
===Mutations===
The Adeptus Mechanicus maitains a watch over a geneseed tithe submitted by every chapter, watching for the continuing purity of the genetic material. In the 5,000 years since their creation the Maledictors geneseed has remained pure and the Cult Mechanicus notes the attention to pay to maintaining the quality of their geneseed. There are two instances, detailed in the chapter's Librarium, of mutations arising in geneseed lineages that have caused abnormal behaviour and tissue degeneration.
The first tells of a mutation detected in the Sus-an Membrane of several neophytes that resulted in the young warriors losing control over the implant and lapsing into suspension during training. These members of the chapter were given the Emperor's Peace by the Chaplain of the 10th Company and their geneseed destroyed.
The second report tells of a recent mutation that was observed by Apothecary Srian in 194.M41. The subtle change of the geneseed in the Biscopea resulted in three battle-brothers in the 7th Company undergoing rapid muscular degeneration and their eventual deaths. In his report, Srian noted that the marines were all recruited at the same time from Nagoma and that the geneseed was ultimately incompatible. Recruiting operations from Nagoma have since ceased.

Here you will find additional material about the Maledictors, from background information to rules and suggestions for taking the chapter onto the tabletop.
'''Using the Maledictors on the Tabletop:''' Here are rules and characters that you can use to represent the Maledictors in games of 40k.
[[Maledictor rules|Maledictors Rules]]
'''1st Company Names:''' On entering the Veteran Company a Maledictor will discard his birth name and take up one of the ''veteran names'' of the 1st Company. These recall the glory and triumphs of the Emperor and remind a marine of his sacred duty to the Lord of Mankind. With each name a marine becomes the bearer of the ancient armour and weapons of the original veteran; these pieces are relics entrusted to a marine's care and often only used for ceremonial purposes. The names each warrior form a rich tapestry of the chapter's history, detailing the many veterans who have borne the titles and the heroic deeds they have performed. The Librarium keeps extensive records of all the bearers of a name and the finest accomplishments of each individual. As well as each member of the 1st Company, all the Masters of the Companies and the chapter's veteran sergeants are bestowed the reward of these legendary names. The Chapter Master and the Maledictors' Ancient, both former veterans themselves also known by their ''veteran name'', the Ancient will also take the title ''Honourius''.
