Okay, at the request of Tynesh I've recovered this information from the Wiki/archives.  I have made no attempt to format this for our current forum, so all Wiki formatting remains.

[[Image:Brutalis-honors2.jpg|The Ceremony of Heroes|thumb|right|300px]]

The Maledictors are a chapter of the Adeptus Astartes that are primarily based within the Anargo Sector of the Ultima Segmentum. They were part of the 22nd Founding, created after the Age of Apostasy to assist in the defence of Anargo from those who would defile the Emperor's Realm. For over 4,000 years they have battled the enemies of Mankind across the Sector and beyond.

The chapter keeps its distance from Imperial authorities and can be far from compliant at times.  In battle the chapter show little remorse in cutting down those they see as opposing the Lord of Mankind and will curse those who do as they march upon their enemies in war.

Based on a mobile fortress monastery and upon their battle barges the chapter can easily relocate across the Sector to where they are needed.  By the same device they are difficult to locate when looked for.

==Origins==

The Maledictors Chapter was formed as part of the 22nd Founding of the Adeptus Astartes in the 36th Millennium.  Regarded by many scholars as one of the most successful formations of chapters, the 22nd Founding came at a time of great upheaval in the Imperium. The Age of Apostasy had officially ended with the death of Vandire, while the newly formed Adeptus Sororitas were beginning to spread the reforming principles of Sebastian Thor. The shadowy new division of the Inquisition, the Ordo Hereticus, began its purges those it saw as corrupting the Imperium.  For the Genitors on Mars the 22nd Founding was a chance to correct the numerous problems that had beset the previous, so-called "Cursed Founding".  With the implementation of new screening techniques for geneseed and stringent security measures, they sought to produce chapters of reliable and steadfast warriors.

One group of chapters from the 22nd Founding includes the renowned Adeptus Praesus, who were tasked with reinforcing the Imperial defences around the Eye of Terror.  The Maledictors came to be located in Anargo due to several factors.  As the Age of Apostasy ended, the Anargo Sector remained engulfed in a bitter civil dispute between the pro-Vandire capital and the Thorian Subsectors of Meksum and Archaios.  Several neighbouring sectors also suffered a similar predicament.  The Adeptus Terra called for a chapter to be located in this unstable region; however, the process of establishing a geneseed line and creating the marines was slowed by numerous disputes between the Priesthoods of Mars and Terra.   Adeptus Terra was forced to speed up its deliberations when the massive Waaagh! Tuskragga ripped into the Cruciatine Sector and threatened to destabilise the entire region.

It was not long before an offshoot had turned towards Anargo and laid waste to the fertile worlds of the Massilian Subsector.  A fierce and bitter war raged for some fourteen years involving Imperial Guard Regiment from across the Sector.  At this vulnerable time, the Alpha Legion used the confusion to sow the seeds of revolt on many worlds, crippling supply lines and causing widespread disturbance.  As the still divided Sector reeled from the onslaught within and without, it seemed to many that the all of Anargo may crumble.  It was mainly thanks to the Silver Skulls chapter that the Imperium was able to wrestle control of many worlds from the Orks and take steps to restoring order.  40 years later the Gaian revolt on Anargo saw the reunification of the Sector and the beginnings of reconstruction in the Massilian Subsector.  It was at this point that the High Lords finally reached a consensus on plans to establish an Astartes Chapter present in the region.

In 649.M36, the Maledictors Chapter was formally founded and they received their Chapter Symbol and their livery.  They are given a decree to patrol the region of space including Anargo and the neighbouring Sectors.  Soon the first marines, under guidance from officers of the Silver Skulls, began participating in battles across the Anargo Sector.  Many challenges faced the Maledictors as they began to gather resources, ships and to secure the rights to recruit from new worlds.  Faced with a burgeoning Ork Empire on one front and a hidden enemy all around them battlegrounds were easy to come by.  These early encounters helped forge the Maledictors hatred and loathing of the Foes of Mankind.

As time past the Maledictors were able to secure more resources, gain the privilege to recruit on worlds across the Sector and to begin manufacturing their own equipment.  Soon they established a fortress monastery on an asteroid and with the assistance of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the hulking behemoth of rock was made into a warp-capable craft.  Drifting through the void, the chapter could strike without warning and fall upon any who stood against the Emperor.

----

==Homeworld==

The Maledictors do not maintain a homeworld as many other chapters do. Instead they are a fleet based chapter, that moves across the region seeking out those who rebel against the Emperor on infringe upon his Dominion.  As such they can quickly respond to any threat that arises in Anargo or the neighbouring sectors.  The closest the chapter comes to having a fortress monastary, is the venerable battle barge the ''Denunciator''.  Constructed soon after the chapter's founding, it has been enlarged considerably to provide the Maledictors with a mobile platform from which the fleet resupply and gather warriors.

The ''Denunciator'' has a larger displacement than comparable Astartes vessels, capable of accomodating the entire chapter should it be required.  Most of the internal space is given over to facilitating the delivery of its marine cargo to a planet and providing support for the chapter.  Alongside the cavernous launch bays lie the Forge, Librarium, Apothecarion and the sacred Reclusium.  Here, the specialists of the Maledictors conduct the continued running of the chapter, document their exploits and ensure their survival.  On occassions the chapter may assemble for High Days of feast, contemplation and ritual combat.  At such times marines may recieve battle honours, be promoted to the Veteran Company or witness the sacred relics of the chapter parade before them.

===Chapter Markings===

The designs below show the symbols that have been associated with the companies of the Maledictors since the time of their founding.  Each emblem is proudly displayed on the Company Banner carried by the Standard Bearer and on the backpack pennants of the squad sergeants.  Members of a company that are awarded with Veteran Honours and inducted into the Captain's Household are allowed to bear the symbol on their right shoulder pad, in place of the usual squad designation marking.

==Combat Doctrine==
The Maledictors, as a Codex chapter of the Adeptus Astartes follow the guidelines established by Roboutte Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines, in aftermath of the Horus Heresy.  The Codex Astartes contains many thesis and guides on the deployment and use of the space marines upon the field of battle and it is from these teachings that the commaders of the chapter lead their troops.  As such, the Maledictors favour no single ''modus operandi'', instead they allow the foe they face and the possible situations that may arise upon the field of battle to dictate how a force is assembled and how it will fight.  Of course there are situations where the Codex acknowledges the limitations of certain formations and impresses upon the commader to utilise their initiative and inspiration.  Therefore each battleforce is unique and tailor-made for the theatre in which it will be fighting.

'''Death from Above:''' - A common practice in many chapters and one often used by the Maledictors is the massed orbital assault, where troops are deployed directly into the thick of fighting via drop-pods.  The most renowned use of this tactic by the Maledictors is the Sorranthan Landings in M40.  With a large fleet capable of launching vast numbers of drop-pods, the Maledictors have often used this tactic to great effect.  Often the ships will swiftly enter orbit and begin the assault before ground forces have time to prepare.  Deathwind pods land amongst the foe, bringing carnage and confusion, before the bulk of the force arrives enmasse.  Dreadnoughts, Tactical squads and Veterans will land and try to overwhelm the enemy, allowing time for the orbiting fleet to launch Thunderhawk Gunships and Landing Craft that contain the heavy vehicles and reserve troops necessary to establish a beachhead.

'''Rapid Assault:''' - On occassion the Maledictors utilise their fast moving vehicles and assault troops to quickly launch raids on enemy positions and supply collumns.  Once the foe has been sighted, Thunderhawk-borne Assault marines and squadrons of Speeders will rapidly close with the enemy, often from several directions at once.  These attacks are quick and brutal, giving the enemy no time to react or call for support.  By the time reinforcements have arrived the marines will have boarded the gunships and left the vicinity.

'''Armoured Spearhead:'''

==Organisation==

The Maledictors follow a standard organisation structure as it is laid down in the Codex Astartes.  The chapter comprises of ten companies that each maintain 100 marines each.  Each compamy is led by a Captain and may also be joined by specialists from the Reclusium or the Apothecarion.  The marines within a company are organised into ten squads that may specialise in one of the three roles defined by the Codex: Tactical, Assault and Devastator.  The exceptions to this structure are notably the 1st Company, where the marines will form different squads depending on how they are fielded, and the 10th Company, who's Scout Squads can vary greatly in size depending on the level of recruitment at that time.

===<center>Headquarters</center>===

The chapter Headquarters includes many specialist and dedicated marines who work to ensure the chapter is correctly run, supplied with equipment and to heal those injured in battle.  The chaplains can also be found here, ensuring that the Maledictors stay true to their beliefs and spurring them on in the heat of battle.

===<center>Battle Companies</center>===

The Battle Companies are the main fighting strength of the chapter and comprise of the most experienced and stoic warriors in the Maledictors.  Each company is fully capable of fighting alone or alongside squads from the rest of the chapter.  Rarely will a single company be dispatched to a warzone, instead a force led by a Battle Captain will be created from elements from across the chapter.  The 1st Company Veterans are often fielded in this way, lending their superior skills to where they can best be utilised.

===<center>Reserve Companies</center>===

The Reserve Companies are comprised of the most recent inductees into the Maledictors and do not see as much frontline action as the Battle Companies.  This being said they are often used to reinforce a line or to aid in patrolling areas of enemy sightings.  The 10th Company Scouts may be deployed alongside the rest of the chapter to provide reconnisance or ambushes, but only in small numbers due to the risks of losing so many new recruits.

===<center>Fleet</center>===

The Fleet plays a pivitol role for any Astartes chapter, allowing them to cross the void between the stars.  This is more true for the Maledictors as they have no homeworld, their ships have become a permenant home.  As dictated by the Codex after the Heresy, chapter fleets are limited in their capabilities to ensure the power wielded by a single person is not too great.  This ruling is reflected in the Maledictors' Fleet, with the vessels all being primarily used to transport and land marines on a planet, while lacking the firepower to engage in lengthy naval actions.

|bgcolor=grey|<font color=white>
The noise was soft, it drifted like a wisp, a shadowy echo of sound through the empty halls and cloisters of the Maledictors fortress monastery. Bearly audible over the ever-present hum of the ancient vessel. It was the gentle soothing lullaby that preceded the chapters march to war, the inscribing of the curse litany, their call to battle. Not for the Maledictors are the raucous celebrations or pious contemplations of other chapters, instead, in whispers they carve their curses to the enemy upon sheets of lead, their promises of doom. In silence the sibilant whispers wind around the carved arches of the fortress in coils of bitter scorn, as each battle brother makes his own dedication of hate for the enemies of the Emperor.
|}
==Beliefs==

Not only are the Maledictors finely trained warriors, they are also devout servants of the Emperor.  It is this philosophy that forms a central part of the dogma and rituals undertaken by the chapter and acts to guide them in their duty.

===The Emperor===

As with the other chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, the Maledictors do not conform to the Imperial Creed and the deification of the Emperor.  Instead they regard the Lord of Mankind as an enlightened and powerful human, the greatest ever to have existed.  He is the embodiment of humanity, possessing the highest levels of intelligence, will and strength.  None exist that can challenge is power and claim over the Dominion of Man and to stand before him is utter folly.

In his ultimate wisdom, the Emperor sired the Primarchs and in turn created from them the implants that allow a human to become a Space Marine.  With these warriors he set in motion his plan to conquer the Galaxy.

===Their Purpose===

===Practices===

----

==Battlecries==
The Maledictors do not have a specific battlecry that they use in battle.  Instead they will often adopt chants or prayers that they recite as they march into war.  These may take the form of litanies and devotions or be specific curses against a particulary hated foe.  Within the chapter, the Chaplains play an important part in raising the hatred and venom of their battle-brothers and will often compose verses that the Maledictors will recite on the field.  Below are detailed some of the most well known canticles of the chapter.

* '''Curse of the Trinity, circa M36.'''

<center>''"To those Whom trespass His Realm, We shall see You.''</center>
<center>''To those Whom chastise His name, We shall hear You.''</center>
<center>''To those Whom defile His Form, We shall '''KILL''' You!"''</center>

* '''Curse to a Fallen Wanderer, M36.'''

<center>''"The Road of the Damned is long and winding; I follow it in my hunt for those damned upon it."''</center>

----

==Geneseed==

The geneseed is the lifeblood of a chapter and without it the Space Marines would cease to exist.  The Apothecaries of the chapter ensure that the progenoids of each marine are collected so that the chapter may live on.

===Creation===

The Maledictors were part of the 22nd Founding, the most recent after the catastrophies of the Cursed Founding. During this founding experiments were undertaken utilising geneseed taken from the ancient repositories on Mars. Some claim that the geneseed used dates back as far as the Great Crusade. Despite several achievements, the Genetors faced many disappointments; many of the chapters created had unstable geneseed and became horribly mutated, forcing the Inquisition to intervene and destroy them. It is believed that the taint of Chaos was able to corrupt some of the chapters too, delivering them to the arms of the Dark Gods and mutating them further.

The 22nd Founding, during the end of the Age of Apostasy, was aimed at rectifying the numerous problems that had occurred before. The Adeptus Mechanicus, under close scrutiny from the High Lords and the Inquisition, developed new practices for handling and utilising geneseed. No longer would they use the geneseed of one chapter, instead searching the gene-banks for individual zygotes or splicing together favoured strains to create organs of pure lineage. The zygotes used to create the Maledictors reportoire of bio-enhanced organs was derived from numerous chapters.

===Practices===

To this day the Maledictors' geneseed has remained stable and relatively unmutated. This is in part due to the refined practices of the Adeptus Mechanicus and is also down to the Maledictors themselves. As the chapter recruits from a wide population base, taking aspirants from worlds across several sectors, their geneseed has never become geno-fixed to a specific population. The majority of the chapter's geneseed can be used in recruits from any world in Anargo and only a few known incompatibilites exist. Any deleterious mutations that do arise often fail to establish when they are subjected to such a wide genepool. In this manner the Maledictors are able to take new recruits from nearly every world they encounter, unlike chapters such as the Blood Angels or the Salamanders whos recruits must be taken from a single world.

The Apothecaries also ensure that the chapter remains free from taint by constantly monitoring the health of marines and their geneseed. They maitain vast catalogues of lineages that track the succession of geneseed zygotes through the chapter. This information makes it is possible to know where each implant and the geneseed from which it was taken and the number of marines into which it has been  used.  If a mutation does arise, they can determine those marines that may become affected and ensure that their geneseed is never used to create new zygotes.

===Recruitment===

The Maledictors' recruiting ships may visit numerous worlds in order to gather recruits to be returned to the Monastery Barge.  Upon arrival on many worlds they may invoke ancient treaties between them and the Planetary Governor, requiring him to supply aspirants to the chapter.  On other worlds they may demand that such requirements are met. In rare circumstances the chapter has forceably taken recruits they desperately need from a planet.  As the Maledictors have no homeworld and recruit from numerous worlds, they have to ensure that those they do take will be receptive to their geneseed.  In order to find such high matches, the chapter will often take several hundred recruits from a world at a time.  The number of successful neophytes created during the recruiting process is infact quite low when compared to other chapters, with as few as 1 in 12 surviving to enter the 10th Company.

A typical recruiting expedition will be led by the Chaplain of the 10th Company, along with members of the Apothecarion and their servo-meds. Unlike many chapters, the Maledictors do not require aspirants to have passed trials or to have fought in battle. It is expected that every child is willing to enter into a life of service to the Emperor as a warrior.  It is strength of mind that ensures a marine can utilise the numerous enhancements they were gifted by the Emperor and not their own bodies.

Each aspirant will then have their blood sampled to see if their body will accept the sacred geneseed of the chapter. Those that fail at this stage will not return to their communities, for to have seen the glory of the Emperor's Angels comes at a price. Many aspirants will be taken by the chapter to become serfs and will serve on vessels of the fleet. Most however will suffer the ignominous fate of having their minds wiped and being turned into servitors to assist work in the Forge. A lucky few may prove themselves to the chapter in otherways, learning from the marines and rising to positions in the Fleet or in the Master's Household.

===Mutations===

The Adeptus Mechanicus maitains a watch over a geneseed tithe submitted by every chapter, watching for the continuing purity of the genetic material.  In the 5,000 years since their creation the Maledictors geneseed has remained pure and the Cult Mechanicus notes the attention to pay to maintaining the quality of their geneseed.  There are two instances, detailed in the chapter's Librarium, of mutations arising in geneseed lineages that have caused abnormal behaviour and tissue degeneration.

The first tells of a mutation detected in the Sus-an Membrane of several neophytes that resulted in the young warriors losing control over the implant and lapsing into suspension during training.  These members of the chapter were given the Emperor's Peace by the Chaplain of the 10th Company and their geneseed destroyed.

The second report tells of a recent mutation that was observed by Apothecary Srian in 194.M41.  The subtle change of the geneseed in the Biscopea resulted in three battle-brothers in the 7th Company undergoing rapid muscular degeneration and their eventual deaths.  In his report, Srian noted that the marines were all recruited at the same time from Nagoma and that the geneseed was ultimately incompatible.  Recruiting operations from Nagoma have since ceased.

==Maledictors Resources==
Here you will find additional material about the Maledictors, from background information to rules and suggestions for taking the chapter onto the tabletop.

'''Using the Maledictors on the Tabletop:''' Here are rules and characters that you can use to represent the Maledictors in games of 40k.

[[Maledictor rules|Maledictors Rules]]

'''1st Company Names:''' On entering the Veteran Company a Maledictor will discard his birth name and take up one of the ''veteran names'' of the 1st Company.  These recall the glory and triumphs of the Emperor and remind a marine of his sacred duty to the Lord of Mankind.  With each name a marine becomes the bearer of the ancient armour and weapons of the original veteran; these pieces are relics entrusted to a marine's care and often only used for ceremonial purposes.  The names each warrior form a rich tapestry of the chapter's history, detailing the many veterans who have borne the titles and the heroic deeds they have performed.  The Librarium keeps extensive records of all the bearers of a name and the finest accomplishments of each individual.  As well as each member of the 1st Company, all the Masters of the Companies and the chapter's veteran sergeants are bestowed the reward of these legendary names.  The Chapter Master and the Maledictors' Ancient, both former veterans themselves also known by their ''veteran name'', the Ancient will also take the title ''Honourius''.
