Planet description
More than ten thousand years after the surface of Fornax was scoured by nuclear holocaust, civilization has been rebuilt in a virtually sterile environment. Huge cities and industrial zones have been built in a world of rock, red sand and radioactive rubble, and by feeding on the mineral wealth of the planet’s crust, the civilization has grown at a tremendous rate. The skies are blackened by long millennia of heavy industry, and what little is left of the planet’s natural oceans are greatly polluted. In stark contrast to this outside world of rock, glass, dirt and metal, the society within, however, is a place of colour, dance and perfume.

Perhaps more than any other worldwide culture in the Anargo sector, the people of Fornax are known for their flamboyant and resplendent appearance, as they decorate their skins with a mix of paint and tattoos, colour their hair to any hue imaginable, dress in masterful gowns and robes of silk and wash their body with scented oils. To offworlders, the inside of cities on Fornax may seem excessively decorated at first, with building walls draped with silk ribbons, walls of ivies and ornate glow globes and ornate paintings covering virtually every smooth surface. Indeed, many figures of authority have looked at the culture with suspicion, feeling that the obsession with physical beauty conflicts with the minimalistic and stoic teachings of many Imperial philosophers and spiritual leaders. In their ten thousand years of serving the Imperium, however, the people of Fornax have proved such skeptics wrong, and have shown a zeal and dedication to the Emperor that is matched by few worlds in the sector.

Their devotion is not what the workers of Fornax are best known for however. The renown of Fornaci metallurgists has spread across the Ultima Segmentum, as their work combines high quality with a unique aesthetic, regardless of the function of the product itself. Jewelry, weapons, agricultural tools, vehicles – all are made with a commitment to beauty, which according to Fornaci philosophy, is as important as the function of the product itself.

Government
After the apparent failure of democracy in past millennia, military forces of Fornax finally seized control of the government in M40, and installed the supreme commander of Fornaci forces as dictator and Imperial Commander. Since this revolution, the position of Imperial Commander has been passed down from each supreme commander to the next, mostly without incident. Even though this has resulted in a significant loss of freedom and power for the majority of the people, the military forces of Fornax enjoy great support from the majority, which is largely the result of successful leadership by these military dictators.

The current Imperial Commander on Fornax is Star General Ravi Singane, is one of the most popular commanders for centuries, and though he has only ruled Fornax for six years, he enjoys the full support of the public. Showing a keen understanding of both interstellar and global politics, Star General Singane has managed to appease both Fornax’ population and Imperial authorities in the present war against mutants. Like all Star Generals and Imperial Commanders on Fornax, Singane is likely to stay in office until he either chooses to retire or dies from old age.

Religion
Although Fornax was once a stronghold of the Adeptus Ministorum, the disastrous events in the Anargo sector during the Age of Apostasy changed Fornax for millennia to come. Parallel to the disappearance of the Anargan Theocracy, the number of faithful worshippers on Fornax shrank drastically in only a few decades. The old colony, which had once been almost monolithic in its devotion to the Adeptus Ministorum, now experienced a drastic religious polarization. On one side, the majority of people on Fornax lost faith in the teachings of the Cult Imperialis, and scattered. Atheism became increasingly frequent, as did adherence to unofficial religions and beliefs. On the other side, however, the minority of faithful worshippers belonging to the Cult Imperialis grew increasingly fanatical, disgusted by the secularism that swept over their world.

The growing number of mutant rebellions on Fornax and alien attacks elsewhere in the Anargo sector have led to the appearance of various militant cults, such as Redemptionists. These militant cults constantly strive to inspire faith in those they find lacking, either by persuasion or force, and conflicts between militant cultists and non-religious groups are growing increasingly frequent.

Although this religious polarization is a significant problem on Fornax, the old philosophies of Fornaci priests and prophets remain as the foundation of Fornaci culture. Central to the old beliefs and their derivative philosophies is the Fornaci concept of beauty as the highest power in the universe. In the Fornaci mindset, beauty, whether in physical or abstract form, is an end in itself, but also a source of power for humans, and a way to worship and empower the Emperor himself. Although the religious beliefs behind this philosophy have faded somewhat over the millennia, it remains an important part of Fornaci culture and the mindset of its people. The Fornaci concept of beauty is known locally as ‘the divine beauty’ and its main principles are famously described a common mantra;

“In beauty, purpose
For beauty, sacrifice
With beauty, victory”

- The clover of firmament

Society and Law
Despite the seemingly warm and peaceful nature of the Fornaci, Fornax has very strict laws and harsh penalties compared to other worlds in the Anargo sector. Although the death penalty is rarely used, criminals are often punished by public lashings, long prison sentences or even forced amputation. The fear of such terrible punishment combined with the non-aggressive culture of the Fornaci has created a very peaceful world, with low crime.

The Fornaci society as a whole is far more conservative than most other colonies in the sector, and many aspects of its culture have gone relatively unchanged for millennia. Tradition is paramount, and any attempt at introducing change or criticizing tradition is regarded as a sign of ignorance, at best. In extreme cases, those who threaten tradition on Fornax are accused of being advocates of the dark gods and are attacked by fanatical mobs.

Because deviants are quite rare on Fornax, and because the majority conforms to tradition and local laws, offworlders will often find that its society is quite harmonious. The Fornaci have a tremendous sense of fellowship and solidarity amongst those who successfully conform to tradition, leading to frequent acts of charity and good will. Egocentricity is considered a cardinal sin on Fornax, and this is reflected in all aspects of society, including economy and politics. One obvious result of this norm is a much more balanced distribution of wealth on Fornax than what is normal for Imperial worlds.

Technology
With two major exceptions, the level of technology on Fornax is comparable with most advanced worlds in the Anargo sector. As an industrial world, Fornax supplies the sector with a range of high quality products, from space shuttles to advanced mining equipment. One notable underdeveloped field is medicine. There are several reasons for this trend, but most significant is perhaps the effects of ancient Fornaci religious texts, which taught the Fornaci that the faithful would be protected from disease by the Emperor. Although religion has lost its grip on Fornax, stoicism in face of medical problem is still considered a supreme virtue, and a lot of medical research is considered unethical based on the ancient traditions.

Another underdeveloped area of Fornaci technology is power production. This is another curious phenomenon that is at least partially attributed to religion. From the early history of Fornax, when its surface was scoured of mutants through nuclear war, nuclear weapons and nuclear energy has been held in high regard on Fornax. Because Fornaci culture was in some ways born in the flame of nuclear explosions, nuclear power has become an important symbol. Critics within the Adeptus Ministorum have argued that this almost religious regard of nuclear power borders on heresy, but the phenomenon is actually more a case of tradition and historical pride.

Trade and Tithes
Fornax possesses a fairly high mineral wealth distributed throughout the Delphinus system, both in mining colonies and the main colony itself. From this wealth, Fornax produces a great number of metallic exports. At the high end, the most famous products include jewelry, luxury vehicles and masterly crafted personal armour, which are found across the Anargo sector and beyond. The bulk of Fornaci exports and tithes however, is composed of mass produced industrial machinery, communication equipment, entertaining technology, low-tech weapons and simple cogitators. Although the quality of Fornaci products varies immensely, the local appreciation of beauty is reflected in nearly all products, regardless of their value. From the most exclusive jewelry to the most simple shuttle transports, the Fornaci products are all famous for their unique design and aesthetic value. Even simple tools are typically decorated with ornate inscriptions and beautiful coats of brass and chrome.

Physiology
The Fornaci population is remarkably homogenous, suggesting that its original settlers came from a single colony or even a single region on Terra itself. With few exceptions, the people of Fornax have a dark brown skin, brown eyes and flowing black hair. The average height of the Fornaci is slightly lower than on most other worlds, due primarily to their own genetic heritage. The Fornaci are also known to have quite round shapes, and many have a very deceptive physique that indicates lack of training. Despite their often plump shapes and low stature, the people of Fornax are not significantly physically weaker or slower than average for Imperial populations.

Psychology
More so than most Imperial cultures, the Fornaci people are traditionally encouraged to be positive, caring, sympathetic and peaceful. So much so, in fact, that offworlders are often taken aback by the warmth and openness of the Fornaci. Many will say that the good will of the Fornaci often crosses over into naiveté, a quality that is not looked kind upon in the Imperium, and which many offworlders are happy to take advantage of.

Although the peaceful and social personalities of the Fornaci have given them a reputation as spineless and passive, this is rarely the case. In fact, the people of Fornax are typically fiercely loyal, both internally and externally, and have laid down many a brave sacrifice for the sake of the Imperium. There is some truth to the stereotype, however, as the Fornaci are not adventurous by nature. One might even describe them as collectively self-centered, as most Fornaci care little about events outside their own system unless they are directly affected.

Another common trait in the Fornaci is the conservative mindset, and a deep-rooted faith in the Fornaci philosophy and way of life. While the Fornaci seem outwardly humble, they often consider their tradition and culture superior to those of other worlds, and may sometimes reveal subtle arrogance in their ways.

Language and Dialect
Fornax has two main languages that are globally spoken. The first is a dialect of Low Gothic called ‘Jarat Gothic’ and the second is a strictly local language that has developed from the language of the original settlers over ten millennia. This local tongue has elements of a coreward dialect of Old Gothic and certain languages from the Segmentum Solar, and is known locally as “Naurata”. Naurata is the second official language of Fornax after Jarat Gothic, and is spoken almost exclusively in the most desolate regions of Fornax. In fact, while offworlders call this world by the high gothic name Fornax, most locals refer to their homeworld as Jairimpor, which means White Home in the Naurata tongue.

Jarat Gothic, the local dialect of Low Gothic, is named after Fornax’ capital, Jarat. Jarat Gothic incorporates many expressions and words from both Old Gothic and Naurata, making it somewhat confusing for offworlders who are not accustomed to it. Furthermore, the Fornaci accent in speaking Low Gothic makes communication with offworlders extra challenging. For instance, the Fornaci often pronounce ‘v’ as ‘b’ and ‘r’ as ‘d’, depending on the word in question. Thus, the Fornaci are as easy to identify by speech as they are by sight.

Planetary Defense Force
Fornax has a sizeable planetary defense force, and has the industry to equip its vast armies, air fleets and orbital defenses almost exclusively with local products. While there have been no serious external attacks made against Fornax since the Age of Apostasy, the warriors of Fornax have proven themselves on countless battlefields in the Anargo sector through enlistment in the Imperial Guard.

Although the Fornaci PDF is technologically advanced, well-equipped and organised, critics from the Adeptus Administratum, and specifically the Departmento Tacticus, have pointed out that the Fornaci commanders rely on ancient, out-dated tactics. Many have also pointed out that Fornaci forces are somewhat excessively adorned, and that many of their warmachines are decorated to the point of impracticality. The criticism has fallen on deaf ears, however, as this is a matter of tradition on Fornax. Infantry are often dressed in proud heraldic colours, and if the situation demands camouflage, the colours are chosen to match the surrounding, while the uniforms remain extremely stylistic in terms of design. Fornax is also one of few worlds in the Anargo sector whose PDF has facial paint and jewelry as part of regular uniform.

The Fornaci philosophy regarding beauty can be seen in virtually every division of their PDF. For example, the Fornaci make almost no use of battle tanks such as the Malcador or Leman Russ. Instead, their infantry are supported by heavily armoured walkers. While walkers do offer an advantage in the dense terrain common on Fornax’ surface, they are also employed in open ground, where their height and slow speed puts them at a disadvantage. While conventions such as these stupefy many offworld commanders, they are entirely natural in the eyes of the Fornaci, as long as they are in harmony with ‘the divine beauty’.

History
When the Anargo sector was first colonized, during the Age of Technology, Fornax was among the first worlds to be visited by settlers. Although some scholars have wondered why this world was among the first to be colonized, when it is not amongst the most desirable worlds in the sector in terms of living conditions or mineral wealth, the answer lies in the principle of serendipity. During this time, warp travel was a far more dangerous and unpredictable affair than it would be after the founding of the Astronomican. Each journey into the unknown was as unpredictable as a lottery, and the rewards could be discovering ancient riches and earth-like paradise, or suffering a horrific fate during warp travel. Like many other worlds, Fornax was colonized because it could support a large human colony and its settlers did not dare going further.

Fornax was originally colonized by two different colonization fleets, the Naurati and the Mircan. Although determined to live together in peace, the cultural differences between the Naurati and the Mircan was quickly evident as civilization flourished. In contrast to the conservative and wary Naurati, the Mircan experimented frequently with the nature of the warp. The Mircan were quick to realize that there were certain powers in the warp that could not be trusted and thus avoided corruption by Chaos. Nevertheless, the unnatural quality of the warp influenced the Mircan in body and mind. Even without dealing with the ruinous powers, they changed, and the birth of psykers became increasingly common, while newborn Mircan were visibly different from their parents. Asymmetric bodies and facial features were increasingly common, but the Mircan viewed this as a sign of evolution rather than rejecting their offspring. In the minds of the Mircan, they were the future of mankind, evolving to become a race of psykers that would ultimately rule both the Materium and the Immaterium. The Naurati were so shocked and appalled at this development that they declared war on the mutants.

Because neither side had built up any significant military powers capable of invading by the time the war broke out, and because both sides were roughly equal in terms of economy and natural resources, the war between the Naurati and Mircan became something of a stalemate and dragged out over centuries, millennia. Through the long Age of Strife, the two factions waged war, but neither side was willing to resort to weapons of mass destruction, both in fear of retaliation and fearing the long-term global consequences. When the Imperial forces arrived in the Anargo sector in M30, the war on Fornax had lasted thousands of years and both sides were on the brink of collapse. Transmitting from a grand cruiser in low orbit, Imperial Emissary Viscount Paul Gabriel Khatchetlova demanded that the entire population of Fornax should submit to the Imperium immediately and pledge their allegiance or be destroyed. In a matter of hours, both the Naurati and Mircan sent shuttles racing to the Imperial grand cruiser to plead to the Viscount for aid in the war. While the Mircan waited on the surface, hoping that this unknown galactic power would see their potential, come to their aid and give them their freedom, they received a video transmission which would later become historical. From the airlock of their grand cruiser, Imperial troops ejected the decapitated body of the mutated Mircan negotiator, recording as the body fell towards the planet below, catching fire as it passed through the planet’s atmosphere. Only moments after the transmission ended, the Imperial fleet began its bombardement. A civilization that had existed for seven thousand years and fought for its own survival for the majority of its existence was utterly destroyed in a matter of hours.

When the smoke, dust and fire of the nuclear holocaust finally settled, Imperial forces supported by Naurati troops immediately launched an attack of the radioactive wasteland that had once been the Mircan civilization, slaughtering any military forces or civilians that had miraculously survived the destruction. As history would show, however, the Imperial forces, under command of Alpharius himself, were too eager to declare victory and move on.

Although Fornax was fortunate enough to remain mostly untouched by the wars of Horus Heresy, due primarily to the fact that the world was so ravaged by war that it had little strategic value, the Age of Imperium was by no means an easy time for the people of Fornax. As the sector struggled to rebuild after the Horus Heresy, followed by a vast crusade against alien forces in the sector, there was little support available for the Fornaci. Things were, however, constantly improving compared to the days of war against the mutant Mircan, and with a moderate mineral wealth at their disposal, the Fornaci began the slow process of industrialization.

During the Age of Apostasy, Fornax was one of the greatest allies of the Adeptus Ministorum and the Dorvastor-Anargan alliance. The Fornaci people were second to none in their devotion and provided a tremendous pool of recruits for the growing Frateris Templar. Under the banners of the Adeptus Ministorum, the Fornaci Templars waged war against many Imperial worlds in the Anargo sector that failed to meet the demands of the Administratum and Ministorum. As reward for their loyalty, the Imperial authorities in the Anargo sector invested great resources in Fornax in order to establish the Anargo subsector as the supreme industrial and economical power in the sector. Meanwhile, worlds across the sector paid for these investments in blood.

When the Dorvastor-Anargan alliance fell and the forces of Sebastian Thor liberated the Anargo sector and restored unity, the cultural and societal changes on Fornax were monumental. Virtually overnight, the majority of the Fornaci people rejected the Adeptus Ministorum and many abandoned their faith entirely, forming new churches or even turning to their old religions. Those who remained loyal to the Adeptus Ministorum were all too eager to persecute such heretics and so the majority was divided between Imperial faith and a private faith.

In M39, a series of terrorist attacks made it clear that the old enemy, the mutants formerly known as Mircan, had returned. Somehow, the mutants that had survived nuclear holocaust had lingered, surviving in ancient bunkers and mines, or even infiltrating the slums and sewers of the Naurati. Over the years, the small and isolated mutant communities had united in secret and now formed a considerable threat to Fornax. Even though only a small minority of the mutants were executing the terrorist attacks against the public, the presence of uncontrolled mutant psykers spread across the planet struck fear into the hearts of the Fornaci and Imperial authorities alike. Furthermore, religious groups pointed to the return of the mutants as punishment by the Emperor, arguing that this was due to the increasing secularization on Fornax. For the past centuries, Fornax has seen an increasing polarization between secular groups and the growing religious minority.

Just working on the Fornax DH Homeworld stats, when I noticed an oddity.  The main SR records the population as 22,000,000, while the spread-sheet gives it as 60,000,000,000.  Just a 3 OoM issue, you know. Shocked  I'm fairly sure from context that the latter is the correct one, but I thought I'd check.

In addition, do you have any characteristics you'd like to accentuate, in the stats and such, while I'm at it?

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, EarthScorpion. I think I might have been aiming for 22 billion, and the 60 billion figure comes from me inserting "tens of billions" into Heaven & Earth.

As far as the characteristics go, I think some of the most significant ones for roleplaying would be
- Appreciation of beauty. I've no idea how to represent this, but it's absolutely central to any Fornaci character. I guess they wouldn't like to be seen in ugly clothes. But that's just on the most mundane level. It should permeate their whole perception of reality and their actions. On the flip side, it might make them greedy or tempted by physical beauty such as jewelry. They might also get depressed in dull surroundings.
- Intolerance of mutants. They hate them.
- As mentioned in the SR, very loyal, but appearing quite gentle and calm compared to some of the more temperamental people in the Anargo sector.
- Language. Although they do speak a dialect of Low Gothic, it's not always easy to understand them, and they don't always understand offworlders either.

Other than this, I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks for that advice; makes sense, about the population figures.

This isn't a one-liner, I just put up the Fornax WO, and I'd like to see what you think.  I figure this is the right place for it, as it covers this world.

As mentioned in your blog, I think it's excellent. I just have to say that it's very inspirational to see one's product being developed further and used by others. Hopefully, there will be even more of that after the 1st of July. But thank you Smiley

Do you have the information for the rest of the system? I don't see the stuff I'm supposed to include in the .css portion of the article/SR page I'm trying to write.

That's actually an interesting question.  This actually extends to other SRs out there, most of the ones that I remember seeing recently all tending towards only a single world... (Remembering that we need the entire system to be developed for the SRs, even if the descriptions are only brief.)

Not sure how to interpret that ellipsis there.

I didn't bother posting the extended SRs for all the worlds, and there were some worlds for which I didn't generate the extended SR. The reason being that it takes about 30 seconds to do so and is just a matter of formatting the very limited content, slapping on a few comments about listening posts and monitor stations.

I'll send you the information soon, Glyphstone.

Interpreting it?  You answered the implicit question, so you interpreted it correctly. Cheesy

Hey guys, remember me  Grin Here is a draft for the prison asteroid, let me know what you think.

Far from the joyful Cities of Fornax, a high security facility of rock and rusted metals orbits the bright planet. The political prisoners housed in this facility are lowered into the darkness to fend for themselves in the ancient labyrinthine nightmare below. The establishment of this hellish place lies in the distant, hidden history of Fornax itself... First constructed as a mining facility by the early Naurati, it quickly fell into disuse with the onset of the mutant wars. Lying dormant in space for many years, it was finally reopened during the rebellious period of Democracy on Fornax as an emergency Operations centre by desperate planetary governors shortly before the fall. Realising that dissidents could not be safely contained on the planet without risking moral contamination, those who opposed the regime also could not be simply executed for fear of open rebellion, and instead were sent to  'processing centres'. Used as slave labour, suffering degredation and inhuman treatment, most did not survive long in the camps and were recycled into factory produced chemical nutrients to feed others. With the fall of Democracy, the new Imperial Commander needed to establish a government on the remains of the old established structure, and to do that needed the support of the governors former aides. In return for their cooperation, the most shocking atrocities commited during the war were concealed, and the mining facility bacame a tomb for the pitiful survivors of the camps. Shipped out to the orbital facility in cramped cargo-shuttles, the remnants were met by grimfaced Demiurg mercenaries. Herded out from the spacedock, the new inmates were led down hewn corridors and corroded gantries to the lip of the open mineshaft, where they were sent into the dark and the great doors sealed. Any records of these proceedings were lost in the paperwork. Seeing the value of this facility as a place to house political troublemakers without needing to resort to unpopular public executions, the imperial commanders maintained it up until the present day. Beneath the heavy blast doors, over the centuries, the prisoners have devolved into feral mutated creatures or gangs of "clean" humans. Some try to recreate a civilised society within reinforced and re-designed cellblocks, fighting for clean water off dripping pipework, scavenging for rats and edible fungi or just trying to cling to their slipping sanity. It is here, that the 'mutatus vir' barters with the merc's still guarding the location for test specimens. All but forgotten by the ruling classes on the distant planet, the guards see themselves as the rulers of this place. Gruesome games are arranged for the entertainment of these sadistic men, where dregs from beneath will fight each other to the death for food or scraps of clothing.

I love it. Fits very neatly in with the history of Fornax. I only have two concerns. The first of which is actually your writing style.  Shocked I notice you tend to structure your sentences repeatedly in a specific fashion, and I've previously had a problem with the same thing myself. Specifically, you start a lot of sentences with a verb, whatever the grammatical term is. I love doing it myself, but if you do it too much, it becomes repetitive and irritating to read. Exempli gratia;
"[First] constructed as a... "
"Lying dormant in space... "
"Realising that dissidents... "
"Used as slave labour... "
"Shipped out to the.... "
"Herded out from the... "
"Seeing the value of this... "

This is absolutely nit-picking, but I thought I'd mention it anyway, because I've noticed that I have a problem with this in my own writing as well.

The second point of interest is the inclusion of the Demiurg mercenaries. They're mentioned rather casually in your text, but what is their place in all this?

Verbs and adjectives  Grin I know, I wrote it over dinner after barely sleeping for two nights and kept dozing off  Roll Eyes  If you tell me how you would like to fit it into the existing text, then it shall be rewritten as required.

The governors and commanders could not very well use troops from Fornax for as a dark a secret as this facility. Also, we know that the Demiurg civilisation no longer exists as a significant presence, but is still around as mercenaries (albeit less common than kroot). I guess I just got tired of the 'space-bikers' or 'dwarves in space' image they have, as well as the fact that they were all supposed to be jovial all the time. What to do... I decided that I liked the idea of the guards being mercenaries (check) They would have to be well equipped and capable of doing their own maintainance work on the station (Demiurg, check) and something offputting about them. The image I came up with was of a short but heavilly built mercenary, sporting facial hair and maybe a shaven head. Tattoos are common, and they decorate themselves and their equipment with odd bits of jewellery and ornamental studs etc. As a whole, they are dirty/greasy but heavilly armed with steel plates strapped atop of reinforced Flak armour. Stamping around in Heavy, Ironshod boots, wearing Furs draped over their broad shoulders, shouting at one another and in general acting like degenerate space banditos.

Or verbal adjective, or perhaps past particible. But anyway, I'm just commenting on the similarity between the sentences and the way they read. Smiley

I was just suggesting that you might want to strucuture your sentences differently from  "Having woken up, Bob went out. Walking along the road, he saw a house. Fascinated by the house, Bob went inside. Being inside, he smelled a pie."

I hope I manage to bring the point across without providing the appropriate grammatical term for it. Wink

The Demiurg seem to be an alien civilisation though. While apparently being based on the Squats, GW has gone out and said they wanted to move away from the Dwarf-image of the Squats. I don't think GW has posted any official images of the Demiurg, but there is a small and stocky alien in the artwork book Inquis-Exterminatus, which a lot of people believe to be a Demiurg. Its face looks more like that of a marsupial than a viking biker though.

Maybe we could include the Demiurg in the storyline but not go all crazy on his physical characteristics. So simply keep them fully armoured and stocky. Might be a writing challenge not to become tempted to try and describe their physiology and such. But it would be cool nonetheless. Later on if GW decided to write more about the Demiurg (which I doubt at the moment, I think they will try to regurgitate the same material for another decade or so or maybe create more Space Marines/Death Krieg chapters, stuff and vehicles) we don't have to throw away what we've already got and maybe need to just add a few tiny modifications.
